Dogs vs Babies

today, i went to my friend's place for her son's 1 year old birthday party. because it was a 1 year old's birthday party, there were lots of babies running around. although i always wonder what the point of inviting other babies is because 1 year old babies don't play with one another, they just whine and cling to their parents and look cute. maybe it's more for parents to look at each other's babies and compare who has more hair, who has longer fingers, who can walk more steadily etc etc.

while people were cooing at the babies, i was cooing at the dog that was running around the house. it was a fat little white Westie Terrier that is super cute and super docile. don't get me wrong, it's not that i don't like kids per se, i just don't feel attached to babies that don't have a personality. take my nephews for instance. although they are my brother's kids, i can honestly say that i didn't really feel very much for them until they began to interact with me. for the first 3-4 months, they're just extremely high maintenance blobs. after that, when they can start smiling, playing and making funny expressions, they can be fun to play with.

but i'm different with dogs - i want to pick them up if they are cute, and i find most dogs cute enough to want to play with, without first knowing it's personality. i guess that must be how it is like to like babies, instead of dogs. i guess that makes me a dog lover more than a baby lover....

oh, i also like cats. :)

on a completely unrelated note, i have half given up training for marathon - it is too painful and too tiring. i think i shall just content myself with 5km runs for general fitness.

i like my knees too much to give them up.
